Below is a very informative and entertaining video on traditional Chinese music, through the courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The introduction and explanation in English are most valuable for those not Chinese educated, like me. This video is pretty long, 1 hour and 14 minutes. Please sit back and enjoy.

Move over Gangnam Style, here comes Gelan Style

Hey youngsters! Gangnam style no more. Here comes Gelan style. Gelan?? This is the Hanyu Pinyin (Chinese) name for Grace Chang. Grace Chang?? Aiyoh!! Below is the "copy & paste" from Wikipedia.
She was an actress from the Cathay (Motion Picture and General Investments Limited) with many successes from "It Blossoms Again" to "The Wild, Wild Rose" and "Mambo Girl".
Chang appeared in 33 films during her 11-year acting career. Her last
actual appearance was in 1964 though she has provided vocals for soundtracks.

Now before you click off the video, the action begins @ 1:50 of the Youtube track. Mind you Gelan is still alive in Hong Kong, perhaps waiting for Psy to do the mambo with her.

Getting to know you
"Getting to know you" is the popular song from the 1956 movie "The King and I" starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr, sung by Marni Nixon. I am sure all of you have heard this song a thousand times. But have you heard, or in fact, have you ever watched a performance by a trio of 3 singers, one from America, one from Japan and one from China singing "Getting to know you"?
Here it is. The Japanese singer is Yukiji Asaoka, a Japanese actress and singer. The American was Dinah Shore. And who was this Chinese lady? She is Grace Chang. Grace Chang? The Chinese audience will know her as Ge Lan (葛蘭), the popular Chinese film star of the 50s and 60s.

Tracy Huang, Happy 61st Birthday!!
Happy 61st Birthday, Tracy Huang!
Today 29 August 2012 is Tracy Huang's 61st birthday. Do you know who Tracy Huang is? She is the age-defying sultry Asian diva from Taiwan, but became very famous and popular when she was in Singapore. Her popularity stretched from the 1970s to even today. To prove a point, she just released her latest Cd last month, called "Tracy Lullaby" comprising 6 Chinese and 6 English songs.
Take a look at the photo below during the launch of her latest Cd.
Stunningly gorgeous at 61 years old!!
My number one favourite : Autumn Wind (风 : Chiu Feng)

Il Volo : Three kids taking the world by their voices
I am no music expert, but these three kids make no mistake will conquer the world with their powerful voices. I present 3 Youtube videos to prove my point. After that, you can listen to more of them from the links provided in Youtube.
Well as usual, some skeptics said they were fakes. Time will tell if we don't have first hand knowledge. I think they are for real.

Free-style mountain climbing : Unbelievable!
This is insane. Or am I the one who is insane not accepting which others can achieve? This is crazy.
Just watch this video. She made the mountain goats hanging on the cliff's wall like child's play.

Gesang of "Bengawan Solo" fame, dies.
[Gesang Martohartono at the JVC Studio (1994) Age76]
Quite some time ago I wrote in this blog on the topic of keroncong. The most famous song is "Bengawan Solo" by Gesang.
Sadly, Gesang passed away at a ripe old age of 92, yesterday, Thursday 20 May 2010.
May he rest in peace.
As a tribute to Gesang, below is probably one of his final impromptu renditions of the greatest evergreen "Bengawan Solo":
Just a reminder; if you wish to know more about this topic please go to my earlier post by clicking HERE:

Thousand-hand Quanyin Dance.

Tai Lihua
Quiet some time ago I posted an article called "Dance of the thousand arms". The accompanying Youtube presentation has been taken off. I think most probably it was because of the accompanying music which replaced the original score. On hindsight, I think it is rather rude and insulting to replace the original music score. The person who removed the Youtube presentation did the right thing.
So here it is. The original "Thousand-hand Quanyin Dance" with the original music score. This spectacular dance presentation was actually one of the items of the musical and dance extravaganza called "My Dream" produced by the China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe which toured and impressed the world from the year 2000 onwards.
The petite and pretty dancer infront is Tai Lihua. She lost her hearing at the age of two. She has been dancing with the troupe since she was 15. For the past 16 years, she has performed in more than 40 countries.
